Who we are
Po Wing Hong Food Market began in 1979 as a dried seafood and herbal store (參茸海味店) with a Chinese and American grocery section. A small storefront on Hester Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown, Po Wing Hong was built on a simple mission: to provide high-quality Cantonese products at fair, affordable prices.
From the beginning, our business has been built on the dedication of our family. As we grew alongside our community, we became a trusted destination for premium Chinese delicacies, traditional herbal ingredients, and nourishing soup and tonic essentials that evoke the familiar and comforting flavors of home.
For more than four decades, we’ve been proud to preserve the richness of Chinese culinary traditions while supporting the non-profit organizations that sustain the heart of Chinatown. As we look ahead, our goal remains the same: to honor our heritage, serve our community, and pass this tradition on to the next generation.
So what exactly is a 參茸海味 shop?
So, a 參茸海味店 sells premium Chinese medicinal herbs and dried seafood delicacies. These stores are common in Chinese communities, especially in places like Hong Kong and Chinatowns worldwide. They cater to people seeking ingredients for tonic soups, traditional remedies, and gourmet cooking—valued both for their health benefits and cultural significance.
參茸海味 (Herbs & Dried Seafood)
In Chinese culture, 參茸海味 refers to traditional herbs and dried seafood used for both nourishment and flavor. “參茸” stands for health-boosting ingredients like ginseng and deer antler, while “海味” means delicacies from the sea such as dried abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, and scallops. These ingredients are valued not only for their rich taste but also for their restorative benefits, often used in soups and tonics to support overall wellness.
